How do I get the bees to accept a new honey super?

Q: I am an 18 year old beekeeper. How do I get the bees to accept a new honey super? I set it up about mid-March. The supers have new wax foundations. The bees are not working up there. The single brood chambers are full of bees. Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

A: Kentucky State Apiarist Sean Burgess fielded this one for us:

“Sometimes bees are reluctant to move up into supers. I have found if I have drawn comb they will be more apt to travel up. If using a queen excluder I would take it off and at least allow the bees to draw the wax prior to replacing.

You may also want to take a spray bottle with some 1-1 sugar syrup in it and lightly spray the foundation. This may encourage the bees to come up into the super.”
