Is it necessary to remove worker bees from the queen cage when installing a package?
Q: Is it really necessary to take out the attendant worker bees from the queen cage when installing a package of bees, or leave them in? Which is best in your opinion? Thanks for your time. G. Carner
A: The queen and attendants with a package have all existed together for a few days; in that case it really doesn’t matter.
It is best to take them out if you’ve obtained just a queen. A bent paper clip or thin piece of wire works good. They do not belong to the hive they are being introduced to, which causes more stress on that hive.
